cup

I had sciatica a couple of years ago. Took a knee in the back playing football.

It is an absolute bastard and I know how you are feeling.

It will clear up on its own eventually, but you can help it along with physio. Get yourself to a gym where they have a sports physio and get an exercise regime designed for sciatica.

There are lots of internet forums for sciatica sufferers to - it won't help your symptoms but it really helps psychologically to swap stories with other people suffering exactly what you have. I found them really helpful anyway.

Good luck mate - and try Voltaren rather than regular pain killers - much more effective.

Bloke down Buffs had this, got painkillers for a pain in his butt cheek.

Turns out he had prostate cancer. He's dead now.

Just saying.

Re: Lower back pain and sciatica
I had this for about a year. Loads of physio, acupuncture etc. all temporary fixes. Strong anti inflammatory drugs eventually did the trick, as they allowed the muscles to relax enough to let the nerve get back into its normal place. Ask your doctor for that.

Like 1964 said, get it checked out and ask for an MRI.

I ignored lower back pain for a few years until I couldn't ignore if any more and tests resulted in a diagnosis of have prostate cancer that has metastised to a tumour in the lower spine.

Don't just ignore it, take painkillers or self diagnose.

chiropractor all day

most of this thread is about pain killers

the crux of it is to try to stop the pain starting, if possible

bottom line, a hell of a lot of back pain is caused by lack of fitness and overweight, not all but a lot

There is a lot of info in there if which I haven't completely fully taken in if I'm being honest as one concentrated on the areas specific to me.

I'm away with work at the minute for the next few days but I'll try and set a reminder to have a look through the the index when I get back and see what it says in there about dehydration.

I know the fusion option comes with a lot of risk, I have spoke to 2 people who have had it, one it worked wonders and he went from having a shocking quality of life to being almost back to normal the other although he was in pain frequently could still do basic functions of walking, bending, etc. After the op he's pretty much out of action completely with very little prognosis that this will improve

Basildon

Does it mention anything about dehydrated discs.

My specialist has told me nothing can be done except fusion which he is not keen to do.

Re: Lower back pain and sciatica
you want to get a book called Back Mechanic by a doctor called Stuart McGill

http://www.backfitpro.com/

I guarantee this will change you're life. I ruptured a disc in my lower back early 2014, the physio I saw for my rehab used practices from this guy. I then got this book to help with the constant day to day management as I will always have a weakness there.

I'm in the gym every day now, lifting heavy weights and I put it all down to the teachings of this man.

Have a look, it will be life changing and anyone who has suffered from a ruptured disc will know that the statement of life changing is in no way an exaggeration.

Re: Lower back pain and sciatica
I know I'm a bit of a wind up on here but seriously go and get an MRI scan and see a spine specialist. Don't guess. Loads of issues with backs and this will pinpoint the trouble.

The real problem is whether anything positive can be done about it.

Just do it.

Re: Lower back pain and sciatica
I had similar. Went to a chiropractor and got me sorted. Not exactly cheap but it worked. As for heat patch, I was told to put ice on the area affected. Wrap some cubes in a tea towel, don't put it straight on the skin.
Also, lay on the floor with your feet on the couch/chair with your arse tucked right into the bottom of the couch/chair, so your calves are on the part of the seat your backside usually goes on. This immobilises your back (I actually fell asleep)
Also, do some stretches where you lay on your back, pull your knee in towards you chest and try to straighten your leg. Obviously you won't get your leg straight or knee to your chest unless your are a gymnast/dancer etc.
Hope this helps.

Re: Lower back pain and sciatica
Do you actually know whether it is muscular? skeletal? disc?
You need to see the GP to find out which before deciding on treatment. I have had back muscle problems three times now (Psoaz) where the pain shoots down the front of the leg and spasms at the back.
Noproxen, Cocodamal, Diazepam and phisio did the trick. It it is muscular it is important to keep moving so the nerve doesn't get stuck. Got very specific stretches from the phisio and they really worked,
